Fostering Citizenship

Introducing the Center

The Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement is one of many ways that Northern Kentucky University seeks to connect the campus and the community.

This powerpoint presentation summarizes some of the services and programs of the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement.

The Center's programming is designed to encourage NKU students to get involved in the community. Hosting speakers, panels and discussions of public issues are part of the package, as are traditional citizenship outreach, such as voter registration drives. The Center also connects NKU students to nonprofits, often as part of an academically based engagement. In every instance, the Center's programming is intended to foster a lifelong commitment to community stewardship among NKU graduates.

This commitment reflects an NKU value, captured in the university's mission statement, which dedicates NKU to educating students who will "be informed, contributing members of their communities - regionally, nationally and internationally; and pursue satisfying and fulfilling lives."

Our Center's outreach does not end with NKU students. Many of our activities and events are open to the community. As a co-founder and sponsor of the Northern Kentucky Forum, for example, the Center hopes to assure a continuing public dialogue around important and sometimes difficult public issues.

Our Center also works closely with NKU's Institute for Nonprofit Capacity (INC) which seeks to build stronger, more effective and collaborative nonprofits in Greater Cincinnati. Learn more at www.inc.nku.edu.
