About the Scripps Howard Center

Our Mission

The Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement & Nonprofit Development works to make a difference in the civic life of our communities through learning, scholarship, community involvement, and mutually beneficial partnerships with other organizations and institutions. The Center promotes a democratic society through the development of civic literacy and civic skills. These skills include: a commitment to understand and remain current regarding local, national, and international issues; openness to diverse viewpoints; the ability to participate in public deliberation and dialogue; and a willingness to take informed action to address community needs.

Our Goals

  • Promote the civic development of NKU students and faculty, P-12 students and the larger community.

  • Provide opportunities for NKU students to engage in service learning, philanthropy, and community service.

  • Serve as a conduit for linking the needs of the community with NKU students and faculty who have the necessary interest, knowledge, and skills to address those needs.

  • Create an awareness of the political and non-political processes that influence the quality of life in our communities.

  • Provide a forum for public dialogue regarding local, national, and international issues.

  • Create a more informed citizenry that recognizes and explores the complexities and multiple perspectives inherent in social issues.

  • Provide faculty with resources and professional development opportunities to incorporate civic learning and community-based learning into their classes.

  • Encourage faculty to increase their involvement in community-based scholarship.

  • Encourage faculty to value community-based scholarship in their evaluation of colleagues.

  • Partner with the nonprofit community to enhance their effectiveness as a key component in a democratic society and to enrich the education of NKU students.

  • Contribute significantly to the community in ways that are consistent with the mission of Scripps Howard Center.
