Service learning and NKU

NKU puts a high priority on active learning -- learning that goes beyond textbooks and lectures. Service learning is among NKU's most significant active learning experiences.

Service learning builds a bridge between classroom and community. As students learn more deeply and gain satisfaction from helping the community, nonprofits gain the direct benefit of a deliverable product.

In a web design course, for example, students first learned how to build a website, and then they built a website for a nonprofit. It was a win-win: Students put their skills to practical use and the nonprofit gained a website it could use right away.

Those are the immediate benefits, but service learning also has a long-term benefit. The interaction creates a lifelong commitment to community stewardship as students are inspired by the work of the nonprofits they serve.

Service learning courses are offered in almost every area of study.

This commitment to engaged learning reflects an NKU value that is captured in the university’s mission statement dedicating NKU to educating students who will “be informed, contributing, members of their communities—regionally, nationally, and internationally, and pursue satisfying and fulfilling lives.”
